What to do when work sucks

Ugh. Another day at work.

Doing things you don’t like.

For people you don’t want to be around.

For wages you can barely get by on.

That’s how a lot of my friends talk about their day.

Maybe you do too.

A passionate believer in the power of “jump starts”, Marianne helps clients obliterate self-doubts, blast through limiting beliefs, and gain clarity to discover their passion and drive.

But it doesn’t have to be that way!

Here are some simple steps you can take to make your current job more enjoyable, while you reach toward your “dream” job.

Find something about your job to take pride in/have fun with.

It can be something simple, like going all in and giving the very best service possible – just for the sake of feeling good knowing you’re helping someone. .

You are a server in a restaurant.  Take pride in how you attend to the customers’ needs.  Feel the joy they feel when they don’t have to call their server over time and again for something. Feel how happy they are when their “special” request is honored without having to fight for it. Feel how they enjoy the privacy you give them so they can have that intimate conversation without unnecessary interruptions.  Side note:  Why not play a guessing game with yourself – something like “Who will order what dish?”

You are a cashier in a grocery store.   Take pride in how you bag up the customers’ groceries.  Picture them at home, putting the groceries away, thankful that the cashier made it so easy by putting like things together. (cold, produce, baking goods, snacks) Pretend you’re a fly on the wall and can feel how easy it is for them to finish this task (which they probably hate to do!)  Side note: Another way to make a cashiers’ job fun (it’s what I did) is to make bagging groceries into a “hands on Tetris” game!

Keep this in mind… if you don’t do your job well, people REALLY notice, and if you a superb job they may or may not tell you – but they WILL notice. If you believe that, in some way, we’re all connected, then somehow, some way, you’ll feel their unspoken appreciation.

Get really clear on what you DO want.

When you’re stuck in a job you don’t like, whether it’s because of the job duties, your coworkers, your clients (or some other reason), you are able to put together a really clear list of what you don’t want.

So make a list of all that you don’t want.

Then make a list of what you DO want.

Now it’s not as black and white of just looking at the “opposite” of what you don’t want.  Because you don’t like telemarketing all day long, doesn’t necessarily mean that you want a job where you never use the phone – it means you get clear on just how much the “phone” will be a part of your work day.

Focus on improving skills that are important in your “dream job”.

Once you’ve gotten clear on your “dream job”, make a list of the skills, the tools and the techniques that are important to become successful in that job.

Chances are that, no matter what you are doing now, some of those skills will be needed in your “dream job”.  Even a cashier who becomes a life coach has skills they can hone on the job.  (i.e. make it a goal to make your customers smile or feel good after going through your line. Or help a coworker who’s having problems to solve them.)

So here are some ideas:

  • Get really good at providing great customer service
  • Improve your communication skills -listening, speaking and written
  • Master a piece of software that you know will be important in your dream job
  • Take on a new side project that would look great on your resume.

As you build and strengthen the foundation for the job you ultimately want you’ll be increasing your confidence, your marketability and your skills!

While you’re stuck in a job you don’t care for, work on changing your mindset.

Find things to enjoy, make up silly little games to get you through the day, and discover parts of your job that you can excel at while building the skills necessary to get your dream job.

When you shift your mindset you begin the shift from where you are to where you want to be.

I truly love sharing what I learn with you. Watching someone have an "a-ha" moment is one of the best things in life for me.

Because I am  a consummate "student" - when I find something new and interesting, I really dig deep.    I study hard and then I use what I've learned to help others.  (Yeah, I have gathered together quite a toolbox!)

I truly do believe in the power of "Jump Starts" and the ability everyone has to "get un-stuck." If I can do it, anyone can!

I believe that every human is unique and valuable,

even if they aren't able to recognize it themselves.

I believe each and every one has the power to create a great life

once they recognize -and accept- their value.

Even as a child I've been able to help people change the way they see themselves - helping them move from a "victim" to an "owner" mindset. I help them to gain self-confidence and recognize their strengths. I've discovered that it's only when you do that, can you "get un-stuck" and "Jump Start" your life.

What drives me is helping others to succeed, to be a support system while they are taking steps toward their dream, and to watch them celebrate their victories.

The Biggest Lesson I've learned is the power of your mind.  It truly does create and destroy.

It was quite a shock when I realized the power that my mindset played in every part of my life - good and bad.  Discovery wasn't enough though, it still took me decades to harness this power, learn to control it, and develop a system to help others master this in a fraction of the time it took me.

Taking responsibility - even for how others treated me - was one of the hardest adjustments I had to make. To move from Victim to Owner mindset was not only difficult, it was, at times, scary.

It is a move that I am thrilled to have taken. It changed my life and it can change yours.
