Stinkin’ Thinkin’ causes that endless loop of chatter in your mind.
One example would be when I got my black belt… Almost every one commented on the work I did, how much I had learned, but one person – who was important to me – discredited it all by saying “How can you all be black belts, you guys are nothing like Bruce Lee”
I was devastated!
It didn’t matter to me that my class and I were being compared to someone with several decades of training… It didn’t matter that martial arts teaches that only when you get your first degree black belt are you considered a “student”… it didn’t matter that everyone else was celebrating…
What I heard – and carried with me – was “You don’t deserve it”
Now that is what I call a classic case “Stinkin’ Thinkin”!
The funniest thing of all – while I carried this with me for a few years, when I confronted the person who made the remark they said
“Did I really say that? Well I was just jealous that you got a black belt”
So yeah, their comment was actually about them, not about me… and I let it bother me for years!
“Every day we all need a checkup from the neck up, to avoid stinkin’ thinkin’ and hardening of the attitudes.”
According to this great article on PsychCentral, there are 10 types of Stinkin’Thinkin”:
- All-or-nothing thinking
- Mental Filter
- Discounting the positive
- Jumping to conclusions
- Emotional Reasoning
- “Should” statements
- Personalization and Blame

Learning to recognize, and transform these types of thinking will create a massive change not only in how you see the world, but in how the world responds and unfolds to you.
Overcome “Stinkin’ Thinkin'”
So how do you make the shift from this negativity?
Some areas in life are easy… you can simply DECIDE to change the way you look at something.
Other areas, well, they take more time. More energy. And sometimes – a little help.
For me, I transformed my most stubborn thinking patterns when I found FasterEFT. (It’s an emotional releasing/stress relief tool that affected me so deeply that within hours of my 1-1 session with it’s creator, Robert Smith, I was enrolled in his Practitioner Training program. Within 6 months I was certified at Level 3! )
Sorry… I digressed…
What I needed was to remove the emotional charge around the memories… and to reverse the decisions I had made, about myself and my situation, in the moment of trauma.
For example, I removed the emotional charge around the memory of being told I wasn’t a real black belt… and then I was able to transform my decision that “I don’t deserve it” into an understanding that, yes, I did!
You, too, can eliminate “Stinkin’ Thinkin'” by:
- Finding the event that triggered the thought
- – “You aren’t a real black belt”
- Understand what decision you made
- – “I don’t deserve a black belt”
- Get to the heart of the emotion you feel
- – “not worthy/not good enough”
- Discharge the emotion
- – Release the pain attached
- Reverse the decision
- – I do deserve this
Make sure that you really do feel the new decision, the new attitude…. it’s real, it’s honest.
IF you stop short of this, chances are you’ll revert to “Stinkin’ Thinkin'” again!
Don’t let “Stinkin’ Thinkin'” rule your life.
Don’t let it limit your potential.
Don’t let it put you in a box that’s far too small for you!

The Biggest Lesson I've learned is the power of your mind. It truly does create and destroy.
It was quite a shock when I realized the power that my mindset played in every part of my life - good and bad. Discovery wasn't enough though, it still took me decades to harness this power, learn to control it, and develop a system to help others master this in a fraction of the time it took me.
Taking responsibility - even for how others treated me - was one of the hardest adjustments I had to make. To move from Victim to Owner mindset was not only difficult, it was, at times, scary.
It is a move that I am thrilled to have taken. It changed my life and it can change yours.
